Heart rate | MaeveMadden

Heart rate

  • @Maeve Madden a question on heart rate - in order to loose weight and increase fitness my heart rate I believe should be 120 plus.

When I am out for a walk my heart rate might be 80-100 consistently for 40-60 mins.  Does this work toward weight loss too?

  • Great question @Sinéad Tiernan - i have been baffled by my fitbit tracking recently. Apparently i burnt the same calories on walk as i did in Spicy Circuits - and i think you know which one is harder!! But they are just a guide.

I think everyone as a different Peak Heart Rate level - but FitBit splits it into 4 Below, Fat Burn, Cardio and Peak. Apparently you want to be in Fat Burn or above to get the best calorie burn. Hopefully @Maeve Madden can help explain!

  • Hey Sinead!

Everyone is completely different. There isn't necessarily a specific beats per minute but it is suggested that you start burning fat when your BPM is working at 70% of you maximum heart rate.

You can work out your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. However this isn't always 100% either because it can also vary on other factors too like weight, height, fitness levels etc... it's very complicated lol!

You need to remember though that your body is constantly burning calories even when you're doing nothing, so the fact that you're out walking will speed up the process regardless of what your beats per minute actually is! I wouldn't be so hard on yourself and focus on the exact number... just know that the fact you've got up to do something is helping no matter what!! ☺️
